HIGH SCHOOL HONORS SUMMER READING PROGRAM

Students enrolled in honors level English courses should read the following novels critically over the summer in preparation for the class they are about to take.

COURSE TITLE & AUTHOR
English 1 Honors The Pearl, John Steinbeck and novel of your choice
English 2 Honors A Separate Peace, John Knowles and novel of your choice
English 3 Honors The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne and novel of your choice
English 4 Honors/AP/IB Lord of the Flies, William Golding and novel of your choice
IB English Oedipus Rex, Sophocles and Poetics, Aristotle

As students read each book, they are expected to annotate the text.  If the book was borrowed from the library or read using an electronic device, the student should keep a double-entry journal or reader’s notebook while reading.  Annotating texts is an expectation of college and career ready students.

Upon returning to school, students should be prepared to discuss the required and choice texts.  Students’ comprehension of the required reading will be assessed through the composition of an essay. Students should refer to their annotations while crafting the essay.  Teachers will continue to incorporate themes and topics from these novels throughout the course.

Current for the 2017-18 school year.
