Inspection of Records

A student’s cumulative education record contains directory information, scholastic information, standardized test data, health records, and other similar information. Individual student records are not available for public inspection; however, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 years of age (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to the student’s education records:

  1. 1. To inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of receipt of written request for access

Parents or eligible students should write to the school principal identifying the record(s) that they wish to inspect. The principal will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected.

  1. 2. To request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes to be inaccurate or misleading (FERPA provisions do not apply to grades and educational decisions made by school personnel)

Parents or eligible students may ask to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the school principal and clear identify the part of the record they want changed and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading.

If the district decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the administration will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and of the right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. With this notification, t he district will provide additional information regarding hearing procedures.

  1. 3. To consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent

One exception that permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests.  A school official is a person employed by the district as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement personnel); a person serving on the school board; a person/company with whom the district has contracted to perform a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an official committee (such as disciplinary or grievance committee) or assisting a school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. Upon request and without consent, the district discloses education records to officials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll.

  1. 4. To file a complaint with the US Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the district to comply with the requirements of FERPA

The school will follow the statewide uniform grading scale as approved by the state board of education. This uniform grading scale and the system for calculating GPAs and class rank will apply to all courses carrying Carnegie units, including units earned at the middle/junior high school level.

A             90-100

B             80-89

C             70-79

D             60-69

F              59 and Below

All report cards and transcripts will use numerical grades.

End-Of-Course Exams

All students enrolled in Algebra 1, Biology 1, English 1 and U. S. History & the Constitution in South Carolina will take a standardized test at the end of each course. The End of Course Examination Program (EOCEP) is a statewide assessment program of end of course tests for specific courses in English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. The EOCEP encourages instruction in the specific academic standards for the courses, increases student achievement, and documents the level of students’ mastery of the academic standards. EOCEP examination scores count 20 percent in the calculation of the student’s final grade in the courses.

The best preparation for testing is the rigorous instruction that your child has received throughout the year in his/her classroom. We are also preparing our students for state testing by helping them to develop 1. test taking strategies and 2. by familiarizing them with the format of the tests. Please speak to your child about the test experience. It is important that students approach the test with seriousness and confidence. We count on your support in the following ways:

  • Students must be present and on time.
  • Students must NOT bring any electronic devices into the testing location.
  • Medical appointments and other out-of-school functions should not be scheduled during testing hours. If your child arrives at school after testing has begun, he/she will be escorted to an assigned area in order not to disrupt the testing environment for the other students.
  • Please help alleviate any anxieties your child may have about EOCEP testing and encourage him/her to take the test seriously and to put in their best effort.
  • Please ensure that your child eats a wholesome, nutritious breakfast each day.
  • Please ensure that your child is well rested and ready to do his/her best work.
